Psalm 120 (AMP) and Psalm 121 (AMP)

The First Two Psalms in A Song of Ascents (a)

[a] It is possible that the fifteen psalms (120-134) known as the
“Songs of Degrees or Ascents” were sung by the caravans of
pilgrims going up to attend the annual feasts at Jerusalem.
But it is equally possible that the title has reference to
some peculiarity in connection with the music
or the manner of using it.

Psalm 120 (1-7): In my trouble I cried to the LORD, and He answered me. Rescue my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. What shall be given to you, and what more shall be done to you, deceitful tongue? Sharp arrows of the warrior, with the burning coals of the broom tree! (b) Woe to me, for I sojourn in Meshech (c), and I live among the tents of Kedar (d) (e) (f) [among hostile people]! Too long my soul has had its dwelling with those who hate peace (g). I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.

PRAYER: Help us, Lord, to always remember to encourage our souls to neither believe lies nor spread them. Though we live in a world shrouded by hostile people who hate peace and spread lies everywhere, we CAN remember that we LOVE and SPEAK peace. AMEN

FOOTNOTES (from Psalm 120):

[b] The ancient rabbis explained that coals from a broom tree are unusual in that they continue burning on the inside even after they are extinguished on the outside. They compared this to a person who listens to slander: even if you try to persuade him otherwise and he seems to be convinced, he is still “burning” on the inside, i.e. still unconvinced.

[c] LINK about other scriptures that have references to Meschech. Note especially, the reference from Ezekiel 27:15, regarding traffickers, that is born out by the others that are noted in the adjacent verses.

[d] [e] [f] LINKS regarding “the tents of Kedar,” which seem to directly relate to the traffickers of Meshech, in that both the tents and the people living in them–descendants of Kedar (the twelfth son of Ishmael) were considered to be “dark” (possibly in color, spirituality, or both).

[g] LINK regarding the meaning of the Hebrew word “peace.”

Psalm 121 (1-8): I will lift up my eyes to the hills [of Jerusalem]. From where shall my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made Heaven and Earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber [briefly] nor sleep [soundly]. The LORD is your keeper. The LORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will protect you from all evil. He will keep your life. The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in [everything that you do]…from this time forth and forever!

PRAYER: Help us also to focus our eyes on YOU, Lord! YOU (the Maker of Heaven and Earth) are our Helper. YOU keep us from slipping into the worldly traps set for us. YOU never sleep at all, and YOU are our Keeper. Whether during the day or the night, YOU are our Protector from the elements of this world–including the spirits of darkness sent out to destroy us. YOU will keep us. YOU will guard us in everything we do. YOU’VE done it in the past, YOU’RE doing it now, and YOU’LL do it forever! AMEN
